This week was a short week in the mitigation. We are not having school this Friday because of veterens day. We have been diging up slucie sledge and quartering them and planting them in our wetlands. We have moved about 40 slucie sledge plants this week.

This week in the wetlands we have been putting woody debry into the bid ponds. This will help animals like local frogs have something to attach their eggs to. We have been pulling scotch broom and digging up main slucie sledge plants, quatering them and planting them.

This is the new Wetland Mitigation Crew for 2011-2012. We have been spreading bark chips along the bank of the wetlands this week. We are doing this because when we spread the Sluice Sledge we are hoping that it will help the seeds stick.

This is the first post of the new wetlands crew. Andrew Betz, Dakota Larsen, Chris Brecht, and Austin Partridge are the new members, in taking care of, and keeping up this years wetlands.

we will be uploading pictures of the wetlands, and giving details about the projects we are doing. This week we are spreading the seeds of the Slough Sedge hedge in hopes to spread the plant and have the population take over our wetlands.

In just a few days of rain the Wetland has formed huge puddles making our Wetlands gain inches of water in a short amount of time.

Hey everyone this is it for UBSA! We worked hard on the wetlands and are now working on the slides to share with our community. Everyone is welcome to come watch us present this Thursday. We will be the second group as all of the UB students go. We would love to see you there. It is at 6:30 this Thursday at the preforming art center in Astoria. We hope to see you there!

Hello this week we worked hard on expantion of the wetland. We are almost done with everything we need to do for now. We have layed down the sawdust and planted sedge on the sides of the hill. This is the final steps fpr the summer. Everyone is working hard in the final push!

Hey to everyone who is reading!

Upward Bound Summer Academy is now working on the wetlands! We are hard at work finding sedge and snakes and some frogs too! We are finishing up week 3. Time is just flying. We have dug up and planted sedge as well as plotting some. Thanks and we will keep you updated!

Quite a few changes in our wetland have occured since my last post. The last couple weeks weve been transplanting parsley, slough sedge aswell as tossing any debris we can find lying around. The changes seem to occur weekly. The willow has really taken off, its rooted and began growing its own steps. Its a very amazing transformation. Weve had quite a few visitors including; wood ducks, garden snakes, possums, and frogs. Today if you look in one of the various surrounding puddles you can find hundreds of tadpols. Which we hope will survive - resulting us with a large number of frogs. More updates soon!

For The Month Of April

This month weve been focusing on pine trees, parsley aswell as slough sedge. Last month we completed the willow planting. As of today we have approximatly 40 sitka spruce trees transplanted into our wetland. We just began transplanting water parsley into the shallow areas around the water. Throughout the month of April we will continue doing so, until summer rolls around.

Returning From Spring Break.

After a nice break off from school we returned to our regular schedule out at the wetland, and were surprised to see a lot of changes. The area seems much greener, the willow we've transplanted has taken off, the sedge seems to be coming along nicely, and we've even had some wildlife invade the area such as frogs and ducks. Yesterday I met with Mr. Ray and discussed the plans for the rest of the year. This week we will plant the pine trees we have behind the fish farm, take some more pictures, and on the weekend try and finish up the slough sedge. But just looking over from what we've accomplished in a year is quite a thought. We will continue to work during the weekends to get this wetland where it needs to be.

March Update

Last month we did a good job planting. Were now starting to even get some wildlife visit our wetland from time to time. I'd say about 1/2 of the wetland is now covered in slough sedge aswell as hooker willow. Once spring break rolls around we are hoping to make alot of progress, and get this wetland approved.

Feb 5th

Last week we accomplished a lot of transplanting. We got approximately 60 planted and plan on producing the same, if not more this week. More updates coming.

Update: 2/12/10
Things are going very well, we've selected an area which we are covering with slough sedge two feet apart from one another. The plants seem to be healthy, and are recovering well to their new habitat.
Plant count approx. 400, numbers should jump as weather improves.

A quick update over the course of last weeks progress. Mr. Ray visited informing us of needed tasks we had to accomplish to get this wetland mitigation approved. We were taught the process of replanting hooker willow. Were continuing to work hard, but due to the awful weather lately again its taking a toll. Hopefully once we can get some sun we will make up for lost time.

Throughout the week we will continue to spread bark dust, were hoping to get a couple more truck loads before the weekend. Were planning on getting another large group together this Sunday if the weather permits it. Our production is speeding up, every ones getting involved and are excited about the progress we've made.

January 9th

Today we got a lot of work from kids in the school. Our group of three quickly turned into 9 which speed up the process dramatically. We continued spreading bark dust throughout the land and planting grass along the embankment to prevent erosion. The work we got to day with 9 people is more than we usually do in a week. We planted around 60 plants, and got the majority of the hill covered in bark dust.

Today we got back to work in the wetland which we missed dearly. We began to continue shoveling bark chips through out the surrounding area. We will continue doing this for the next couple days. Once we finish we will restart production on the plants.

January 7th 2010
Today we were informed by our science teacher Steve Porter that we have a few spruce trees in pots that he's willing to give to us. We also have a set date for Mr Ray to return and observe our progress. Also this weekend were hoping to get some students to come help us kick start the planting process

Winter Weather Dec1st-9th

Our production slowed as a cold climate change arose. The past week our entire wetland has been completely frozen. Water, dirt and all (Video & pictures below.)Were hoping our plants will pull through. The next couple days we'll be waiting patiently to get back to work, once it warms up.

Slough Sedge Planting Process

November 20th 2009
Today more students came out and decided to lend a hand in the planting process. Which helped speed things along dramatically. We got about twice as many planted as we would have the two of us. I think we are about at 30 plants deep into the process, more info tomorrow.

Update:

November 24th 2009;
Today was another day of digging up slough sedge. Which we will continue doing so until we meet the requirements. Due to the upcoming holiday our production may slow down. As of now we are at 40 plants. More updates soon.

December 1st 2009;
After two weeks off from school it was time to get back to work. We've continued to dig out and replant the slough sedge. Its already been a long process but seems to be going along well. The total of plants as of today is 60. We need more students to come help. Four kids doesn't seem to cut it, at this rate we wont meet the deadline.

December 4th 2009;
We stepped up the process this week. We had two of us digging up slough sedge and two of us planting. We replanted approx twenty each day, the final count this week is 100. We've also been discussing with Mr. Heyen about having kids come help us on a Saturday in the near future, to continue speeding up the process. Things are starting to come together.

December 16th 2009;
Today we began shoveling debris off the side of the baseball field and spreading it throughout the embankment of the land, in high hopes to spread seed. Just another way of trying to get the planting process running smoothly.

December 17th 2009;
Today we continued shoveling the soil off the field and into the wetland, this process will take at least the next couple days.

December 19th 2009;
Today we finished up with the debris, and started a new step. We have a large amount of bark chips that we are going to use along the sides of the wetland in order to control some erosion. We will continue this project through out the time we have left before break.

Day Five

Yesterday we were limited due to the rain and wind. But we still got some raking in. Today we finished it up and also took pictures on the progress they made over the weekend. We have some area now with a vast amount of water, giving us the opportunity for a frog habitat. We will continue planting throughout the week, hopefully we can get some decent weather. Day Four

Today, we finish planting the grass we picked out yesterday (shown in the picture to your left.) We placed each plant a safe distance apart from each other in order to grow properly. We have about 14 plants planted so far. Were hoping to get more help over the week to speed up the process.

Today, we continued leveling out some debris.For the first time, we began to pull out some plants to sow into our newly made wetland. We dug up and situated some grass. We got about 12 plants out of the surrounding area and plan on placing them in tommorow.

Day Two

Today, we picked up our supplies at Home Depot including three shovels, two rakes, and a couple pairs of boots. We then, took some pictures on the progress of the wetland(below.) We created a protected wetland folder on our computers server to keep all of our pictures and files in. Next, we began to start leveling out some of the debris off the grass and into the area, hoping to spread some seed and get some plants growing.

Day One: Digging Begins

Digging began early Saturday morning, and continued on through out the day. Saturday, we learned about what needed to be planted over the course of the year. The construction is going along well. We are close to halfway done. The plan is to be working on it throughout the week. We also priced supplies at Home Depot, should be picking them up tommorow and getting to work.
